【General Questions / Non-Majors】
(1) How do course capacity settings and course categories (Required, Core Elective, Elective) work? Course Capacity Settings:
Required courses offered by the Department of Japanese are strictly closed to non-majors for enrollment or auditing. Double major students are treated as department majors.
Elective courses offered by the Department are open to all university students.
Minor students (including Extended Minor students) may enroll in specific elective courses (refer to the Extended Minor Substitute Course List) and core elective courses offered by the Department via the registration system.
Starting from the 113th Academic Year, the Extended Minor courses will only be open to non-majors if there are remaining spots available (degree program students can only register for specific courses). Please add these courses during the Add/Drop period. Note: Starting from the Fall Semester of the 113th Academic Year, credit fees will be reinstated for the Extended Minor program courses. Please refer to the tuition and fee standards. Summary: The most important thing is to know exactly which courses you must complete to graduate, earn a double degree, or obtain a minor/program certificate. As long as you have completed the required courses and met the relevant standards, we will recognize them regardless of their specific category.
(2) I really want to learn Japanese, but I wasn't admitted to the Extended Minor program (or I don't want to pay credit fees / I only want to take basic courses / I am a freshman). What should I do? Students can take Japanese courses through the following channels:
We recommend enrolling in Japanese courses offered by the Foreign Language Center (FLC) or the Center for Public and Business Administration Education (CPBAE).
During the Add/Drop period, you may enroll in minor courses that still have available spots. (Note: Minor courses require credit fees; the course code starts with 010).
(3) Why aren't there more Japanese courses open to all university students? Also, why aren't there more available spots? This is due to the strict limitations on the teaching hours of our faculty (according to university regulations, professors/associate professors/assistant professors cannot exceed 6 extra teaching hours). To maintain teaching quality and accommodate individual faculty research schedules, the capacity for each class varies. However, the Department has made great efforts to offer as many courses as possible to meet campus-wide demand and has significantly increased the quota for the Extended Minor program. Why offer these courses under the Extended Minor program instead of regular department courses? Is it to collect credit fees? The answer is no. Faculty compensation for the Extended Minor program is funded separately and is not restricted by university staffing quotas or standard teaching hour limits. This flexibility is what allows us to open more class sections.
(4) What elective courses are offered by the Department of Japanese this year? Elective courses are offered across the Fall and Spring semesters. For details, please check the University Course Catalog under "College of Foreign Languages and Literature" → "Undergraduate Program" → "Department of Japanese."
(5) The Department's courses do not allow for the printing of Course Add Forms. How can I manually add a course? The printing of Course Add Forms from the university system is disabled for all courses in the Department (both major and minor). Please go to the Department's website → "About Us" (系所介紹) → "Regulations & Forms" (規章表格) → "Student Forms" (學生相關) to download the Department's official Course Add Form.
(6) I have other questions! Please refer to the Q&As in other categories first. If your question is not answered, please contact the Department Office via email (japanese@nccu.edu.tw).
