(Course Registration Notices: Please pay special attention to the highlighted content.)
※ Starting from the Fall Semester of the 113th Academic Year, credit fees will be reinstated for the Extended Minor program courses, and these courses will be open to all university students during the Add/Drop period. If a course is fully booked, students must assess the likelihood of successfully joining via the waitlist. (Please refer to the 113th Academic Year Extended Minor Fee Status Reference Table.)
※ "Japanese Seminar (I)" and "Japanese Seminar (II)" have been restructured into "Japanese Listening Practice" and "Advanced Japanese Listening Practice." Minor students enrolled before the 113th Academic Year should use Japanese Listening Practice to waive Japanese Seminar (I), and Advanced Japanese Listening Practice to waive Japanese Seminar (II).
※ The 114th Academic Year will be the final year "Elementary Japanese" is offered. In the 115th Academic Year, it will be restructured as "Japanese Reader (I)."
【Minor Students】
(1) What is the Extended Minor program? Originally, the quota for the minor program was quite limited (around 20-30 students). To meet university-wide demand, some departments increased their minor capacities. Our Department currently accepts 300 students (plus 5 from the UST system). Because this exceeds the teaching capacity of our internal faculty, the Extended Minor program primarily hires external instructors.
(2) Is the teaching quality of the Extended Minor program guaranteed? Every year, the Department conducts standard teaching evaluations and passes the unedited feedback to the instructors to help improve teaching quality. If students report any issues regarding the classes, we communicate them to the teachers. The evaluations also serve as a key reference for contract renewal. Over the past few years, students have highly praised the teaching quality of our instructors. We will strive to maintain this standard and encourage students to report any issues to the Department Office at any time.
(3) I am a new minor student. How and where do I register for courses? Please log into the university's course registration system. Under "Course Grouping and Department," select "General Education and Group Courses" (通識與分組開課) → "Minor" (輔系) → "Japanese Minor" (日輔). Please register for courses there (course codes start with 010), not under the main Department of Japanese. (Note: The course structure changes starting from the 113th Academic Year. Please refer to the Extended Minor Substitute Course List.)
(4) Are there any things I need to pay attention to when registering for courses?
Minor courses do not have prerequisite blocks (擋修). You may freely adjust your course schedule according to your situation. However, it is highly recommended to take courses sequentially as outlined in the minor course curriculum.
For full-year courses, if you do not pass the Fall semester, you will be blocked from taking the Spring semester. You can adjust your registration based on your academic progress and career planning, but we urge students to choose courses that match their actual Japanese proficiency level.
To take "Japanese Writing," students should possess language skills equivalent to at least having completed Elementary Japanese, and ideally possess Intermediate Japanese proficiency or higher. (Instructors have recently noted varying proficiency levels affecting teaching quality, so minor students are urged to take note).
(5) I previously took Japanese courses offered by the university. Now that I am an Extended Minor student, can I use these credits for waivers? For details, please refer to the "Minor Required Course List" under "Course Information" → "Undergraduate Program" on the Department website. To apply for a waiver, please complete the "Credit Substitution Application Form" (downloadable from the Department website → "About Us" → "Regulations & Forms" → "Student Forms") and submit it to the Department Office before graduation.
(6) I already have a foundation in Japanese and don't want to take the basic courses. What should I do? For the course skipping (advanced placement) policy, please refer to the Department website → "About Us" → "Regulations & Forms" → "Rules & Regulations." For every credit you skip, you must take an equivalent number of credits in Department elective courses to make up for it. For example, if you skip Elementary Japanese (6 credits), you must add 6 credits of Japanese Department electives. To apply, complete the "Credit Substitution Application Form" before graduation and submit it to the Department Office along with the original and a photocopy of your Japanese proficiency test certificate.
(7) What is the maximum number of credits I can waive?
For minor students enrolled in or before the 112th Academic Year: The maximum waiver limit is 16 credits (Required courses: up to 12 credits; Elective courses: up to 4 credits). This limit includes credits waived from study abroad programs.
For minor students enrolled from the 113th Academic Year onwards: The maximum waiver limit is 14 credits (Required courses: up to 10 credits; Elective courses: up to 4 credits). This limit includes credits waived from study abroad programs.
(8) What's the difference between Waiving, Skipping, and Substituting? Does it mean if I don't take certain courses, I have to take others? There are two scenarios:
If you are using university courses you've previously taken (whether offered by the Law Department or the FLC) to waive (抵免) credits, you can obtain your minor qualification with fewer remaining credits (deducting Elementary/Intermediate levels). Any further elective courses you take in the department are just for your own enrichment.
If you are applying for Credit Substitution (替代) (i.e., skipping (跳修) courses using an external proficiency certificate), you must take Department elective courses to make up for the credits of Elementary Japanese / Intermediate Japanese / Japanese Seminar (I). (Rule of thumb: The number of credits you skip must be exactly replaced by an equal number of elective credits.)
(9) I am a minor student, but I can't register for the minor course I want. What should I do? The Department has already opened many additional sections for the Extended Minor program. We ask students to try and adjust their course schedules. To maintain the teaching quality of each class, we advise against trying to force-add into a class that is already at full capacity.
(10) What does "Elective Courses" mean in the Minor Required Course Table? This refers to the core elective / elective courses offered to 3rd and 4th-year majors in the Department of Japanese (including Master's courses open to juniors and seniors). Only the elective courses listed in the Minor Required Course Table can be counted as minor elective credits. Elective courses not listed in this table will not be accepted as minor elective credits.
(11) I am a minor student, but I want to abandon my minor qualification. What should I do? Are the credits I've taken still useful? You must apply for abandonment online within the period specified by the university. (Please note: If you do not officially abandon it, you will not be able to graduate). Whether the credits you have already earned can be counted toward your graduation requirements will depend on your situation and your major department's regulations. Online Application Path: Log into iNCCU → University Info System Web Portal → Student Information System → Academic Services → "Apply/Abandon Minor & Double Major System." If you fail to abandon the minor within the standard timeframe and need to do so due to special circumstances, you must submit a special petition for approval.
(12) Starting from the 113th Academic Year, minor courses require a minimum of 20 enrolled students to open. Courses with fewer than 20 students will be canceled after the Manual Add/Drop period.
After the standard Add/Drop period, courses with 15 or fewer students will be canceled so that students in those courses can manually add other courses during the Manual Add/Drop phase.
After the Manual Add/Drop phase, courses with fewer than 20 students will be officially canceled. Students are advised to monitor enrollment numbers and check the Department website announcements regularly.
(13) The Department's courses do not allow for the printing of Course Add Forms. How can I manually add a course? The printing of Course Add Forms from the university system is disabled for all courses in the Department. Please go to the Department's website → "About Us" → "Regulations & Forms" → "Student Forms" to download the add form.
(14) What should I do if a course is blocked (擋修)? If you did not take the Fall semester of a full-year course and want to take the Spring semester course but are blocked by the system, there are two solutions:
Submit an application form during the "Permit Course Registration for Blocked Subjects" period, then register online yourself.
Submit a signed Course Add Form during the Manual Add/Drop period.
(15) I have other questions! Please contact the Department Office via email (japanese@nccu.edu.tw).
