【Department Majors】

(1) Is there a mistake? Why can't I register for our department's elective courses?

Please personally ask the course instructor if they are willing to allow you to manually add the course. If approved, submit the Course Add Form with the instructor's signature to the Department Office within the university's specified timeframe to process your registration.

The system printing of Course Add Forms is disabled for all courses in the Department of Japanese (both major and minor). Please go to the Department's website → "About Us" (系所介紹) → "Regulations & Forms" (規章表格) → "Student Forms" (學生相關) to download the Add Form yourself.

(2) Can I apply for course skipping (Advanced Placement)?

For the course skipping policy, please refer to the Department website → "About Us" → "Regulations & Forms" → "Rules & Regulations." Please note that no matter how many credits you skip, the total number of credits required for graduation remains exactly 128.

(For every credit skipped, you must make up for it with an equal number of credits from the Department's elective courses.)

Once you have confirmed you have made up the required credits, apply for course skipping by submitting the "Credit Substitution Application Form" along with the original and a photocopy of your JLPT certificate to the Department Office before graduation. (For an example of how to fill out the form, refer to the attachment).

(3) How should I choose sections for sectioned courses?

Since the 109th Academic Year, these courses have been divided into 3 sections, with students automatically assigned (system enrolled) by the Department. Starting from the 114th Academic Year, students in Japanese Conversation Seminar (I) and Japanese Composition (I) will not switch sections (except for Composition Section B). However, Japanese Conversation Seminar (II) and Japanese Composition (II) will require switching sections between the Fall and Spring semesters.

To maintain equal student numbers and proficiency levels across the three sections, Department majors (including double majors) are not permitted to drop and switch sections without special physical or mental health reasons and explicit departmental approval.

(4) Why can't I drop Japanese Conversation Seminar (I)/(II) and Japanese Composition (I)/(II)?

To maintain equal student numbers and proficiency levels across the three sections of our small class courses {Japanese Conversation Seminar (I)/(II), Japanese Composition (I)/(II)}, they are set as "non-droppable." If you have specific physical/mental conditions or schedule conflicts, you may apply to drop the course before the Add/Drop period begins (please see separate announcements). Please note that once you drop the course, you may not re-add the exact same course later.

(5) What if I am considering transferring departments or taking a leave of absence?

If you need to transfer departments or take a leave of absence due to personal reasons, we highly recommend that you inform and discuss your plans with your academic advisor first before applying at the Department Office. Thank you.

(6) Will extra core elective courses count as elective courses?

Yes. Once you have fulfilled the required number of core elective credits, any additional core elective courses you take will be counted as general elective credits.

(7) Will I face academic dismissal for failing half my credits (the "2/1" rule)?

Because Article 33 of the University Academic Regulations has been deleted, the "2/1" academic dismissal rule no longer exists. However, according to Article 50: Undergraduate students who fail to complete the required graduation credits within the prescribed study period may extend their study period by one semester to a maximum of two academic years. Therefore, please pay close attention to your graduation time limit. (This does not mean you can infinitely fail classes every semester!)

(8) I double major in Department XX. Can I apply to graduate with Department XX as my primary degree?

Absolutely. According to Article 10, Paragraph 2 of the University's Regulations for Undergraduate Double Majors: "In the semester of expected graduation, a student pursuing a double major who has completed the required course credits for the double major, met the graduation requirements of that department, and obtained the qualification of the original department (Department of Japanese), may submit a special petition to graduate with the double major department as their primary degree. The application deadline follows the schedule for abandoning a double major or minor." Therefore, this application has been available since the Spring Semester of the 109th Academic Year.

Please note that if an undergraduate student wishes to graduate with their double major as their primary degree, in addition to completing the required credits and meeting the graduation conditions of the double major department, they must also obtain the Minor qualification of the Department of Japanese.

  • Application Deadline: Students must submit the application before the 2/3 mark of their expected graduation semester (please refer to the University Academic Calendar).

  • Required Documents: Application Form (see attachment) + Credit Substitution Application Form + Academic Transcript.

The Department's minor qualification can be recognized and waived using the Department's major courses as follows:

Notes:

  1. Department courses can only be used to waive minor courses when transferring from double major to minor, or when applying to graduate with the double major department as the primary degree. Because minor and major curricula differ, minor courses cannot be used to waive major courses.

  2. When waiving credits, you can only use a higher number of credits to waive a lower number of credits; any surplus/leftover credits cannot be used to waive other subjects.

(9) Will courses be blocked (擋修)?

Although the Department's courses generally do not have prerequisites, for full-year courses, if you fail to take the Fall semester, the system will block you from adding the Spring semester course. You must submit an application for "Permit Course Registration for Blocked Subjects." Please refer to the attachment for the procedure.

Note: After your block-override application is approved, you must manually log into the system and add the course yourself.

(10) Can extra General Education credits count as elective credits?

No, extra General Education credits will not be counted towards your graduation credits. However, extra core elective credits can be counted as elective credits!

(11) Can I apply for early graduation?

Yes, if you meet the conditions below. However, early graduation requires discussion and approval at the Departmental Affairs Meeting. Therefore, ensure you submit your application to the Department Office within one month prior to the university's official deadline (which falls between the Manual Add/Drop deadline and the Course Withdrawal deadline each semester).

  1. Your weighted average academic grade (excluding the semester of early graduation) must be 80 or above, OR you must rank within the top 20% of students in your department and grade level.

  2. Your conduct grade for every semester must be 80 or above, or an A.

  • Because it must pass the Departmental Affairs Meeting, applicants are urged to submit their requests as early as possible.

  • Required Documents: Early Graduation Application Form (see attachment), Complete Academic Transcript, and Conduct Transcript.

(12) Do I need to apply for delayed graduation?

If you have not met the standard graduation credit requirements, or if you have unfulfilled credits for your minor or double major, you will automatically be classified as a delayed graduation student. No special application is required.

(13) I have other questions!

Please contact the Department Office via email (japanese@nccu.edu.tw).

【Program Students】

(2) If I have previously taken Japanese courses offered by the university, can I directly waive credits?
