Q1: What areas of expertise do the professors at NCCU's Japanese Department specialize in?

A:
Our full-time faculty members specialize in three main areas, with a total of 9 professors:

  • Linguistics: 4 professors

  • Japanese Literature: 3 professors

  • Japanese History and Culture: 2 professors

This diverse structure allows students to explore the Japanese language and culture from multiple academic perspectives.

 

Q2: What do the linguistics professors teach? Is it difficult to understand?

A:
Not at all! Our linguistics professors cover a wide range of fields, from theoretical linguistics to sociolinguistics. Their teaching is clear and approachable, helping students:

  • Grasp the grammatical structure of Japanese

  • Compare it with Mandarin and other languages

You won’t just learn how to use the language—you’ll also understand how it works.

 

Q3: Does studying literature just mean reading old texts? What can I do with it?

A:
Not at all! Our literature professors specialize in everything from classical to modern and contemporary Japanese literature. Through literature, students gain insight into:

  • The psychology and social structures of Japanese people

  • The connections between literature and popular culture, such as anime and film

So if you're interested in stories, creativity, or Japanese media, this is the perfect path for you!

 

Q4: How is studying Japanese history and culture relevant?

A:
Our professors of history and culture are experts in both Japanese history and Japan–Taiwan cultural relations. Their courses help you:

  • Understand Japan’s historical and social development

  • Reflect on your own cultural identity through comparative studies
