Event Overview: This lecture, titled "Taiwan's Memory of Japan and Japan's Memory of Taiwan: Focusing on the Repatriation Experience and School Memories of Wansei," explores the intertwined historical memories between Taiwan and Japan. Taiwan's memory of Japan and Japan's memory of Taiwan—two collective memories from seemingly different narrative spheres—are actually closely related in both their distal and proximal causes to the repatriation (hikiage) experience of Wansei (Japanese born in Taiwan during the colonial period) and the school memories they have woven. We sincerely invite those interested in the study of Taiwan-Japan history and memory to participate.
