1. Purpose:
To encourage diverse foreign language learning and enhance translation skills among NCCU students to meet the demands of an internationalized society, the Center for Translation and Cross-Cultural Studies at the College of Foreign Languages is organizing the “Foreign Language Translation Rookie Award.” Undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students at NCCU are welcome to participate. In addition to traditional Chinese-to-foreign and foreign-to-Chinese translation tasks, this competition introduces an AI post-editing task across all language groups to explore future possibilities of human-machine collaboration in translation.

3. Eligibility:

  • Current NCCU students of any nationality (undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels).

  • Participants may register for only one language group.

4. Language Groups and Tasks:

  • Languages: English, Arabic, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Turkish.

  • Task composition: Prose 40%, Poetry 30%, AI Post-Editing 30%, up to 900 words total.

  • English group includes Chinese-English and English-Chinese translation; other groups involve foreign language to Chinese translation only.

  • Exam duration: 90 minutes for all three tasks.

5. Competition Date and Location:
October 5, 2024 (Saturday), 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Research Building 1st and 2nd floors, NCCU campus

6. Important Notes:

  • Please bring your student ID or valid identification for verification on the competition day.

  • Only printed dictionaries are allowed in the exam room.

7. Awards:

  • Excellence Award: NT$2,000 each

  • Merit Award: NT$1,000 each

  • Number of winners depends on the number of participants per language group.

  • Excellence awardees will be guided to submit their work to the Center’s journal, Guang Yi (to be published at year-end).

  • Awards will be presented at the Center’s international conference on November 9, 2024.

8. Registration:

  • Registration implies acceptance of the competition rules and judges’ decisions.
