To ensure that students do not miss any necessary procedures, we have prepared the following guide.
Once you complete all the steps listed below, you will be eligible for graduation!

【Academic Research Ethics Education】

Starting from the 2016 academic year (105 AY), all M.A. students must complete and pass the Academic Research Ethics Education Course before the end of their first academic year. Students who fail to pass the course will not be allowed to apply for the degree examination.

How to take the course:

Students must complete a 4-hour online course and pass the assessment. If the test is not passed, the course must be retaken.

【Graduation Procedures】For students enrolled before 2020 academic year (109 AY)

1.    Thesis Topic Presentation

o    Submit the “Thesis Topic Presentation Application Form” to the department office by the designated date. On the day of presentation, bring enough copies of the presentation materials for all attendees.

o    Recommended timing: After completing the thesis structure in the first year, present at the end of the semester. If not completed, present the following semester.

(Presentation duration: approx. 20 minutes)

  1. Mid-term Presentation

    • Submit the “Mid-term Thesis Presentation Application Form” (including names of committee members and presentation time) and presentation materials to the department office at least two weeks before the presentation.
    • After presenting, report your thesis title via the iNCCU system as required by the university.
    • Recommended timing: In the second year, when 50–70% of the thesis is completed, any time before the oral defense.

 

  2. Thesis Oral Defense

    • Submit the “Application for Degree Examination” to the department office before the academic leave deadline of the semester in which the defense is scheduled. Late submissions will not be accepted.
    • Students who fail to apply and have not reached the maximum period of leave will be considered on leave. Those who have reached the limit will be dismissed.
    • Submit the draft thesis and notify the department of the defense schedule at least two weeks before the oral defense. The department will send out the committee invitation letters along with the thesis draft.
    • On the day of the defense, download and fill out the “Thesis Oral Examination Report” and the “Signature Page” in advance from the “Downloads” section.

Recommended timing: After completing 100% of the thesis in the 3rd or 4th year, schedule the defense by January 31 or July 31 of the intended graduation semester.

Starting August 1, 2019, degree exam applications must follow Article 3, Paragraph 2 of the NCCU Graduate Degree Examination Guidelines. This includes:

  • Thesis plagiarism check via the university system
  • Advisor’s signature
  • Departmental preliminary review and approval
  • Final submission to the Office of Academic Affairs for secondary review

Committee qualifications must comply with Articles 6 and 7 of the guidelines. Qualifications under Clauses 3 and 4 are determined by the relevant department or college committee.

Turnitin Account for Plagiarism Check:

  1. Request an account from the department office
  2. Activate the account via instructions sent to your NCCU email
  3. Submit your thesis via the designated course page and click “Submit” for similarity check

 

【Graduation Procedures】For students enrolled from the 2020 academic year (109 AY) onward

1.Thesis Proposal Presentation

  • Students must submit and orally present their thesis proposal by the end of the first semester of their second year.
  • The proposal must include:
    (1) Thesis Title
    (2) Research Purpose and Motivation
    (3) Research Method
    (4) Scope of Research
    (5) Literature Review
    (6) References
  • The presentation must be reviewed and approved by 3 to 5 professors (assistant professor or above).
  • Submit the proposal to the department office at least two weeks prior for distribution to the reviewers.
  • If the proposal is not approved, students may apply for a second presentation. From the second attempt onward, all related costs are the student’s responsibility.

2.Thesis Oral Defense

  • After completing the thesis and receiving approval from the advisor, students may apply for the oral defense before the academic leave deadline.
  • Submit the signed application form (with plagiarism check and advisor’s approval) to the department office.

Note: Same procedures and regulations apply as noted in the section above (as of August 1, 2019).

3.Graduation and Departure Procedures

  • From August 1, 2015 (104 AY), students who pass the oral defense must complete thesis upload and departure procedures within one month of the start of the following semester (by September 1 or March 1).
  • Students who cannot finish in time may apply for delayed graduation (see Note 1).
  • Students who exceed the maximum period of study and fail to graduate will be dismissed.
  • Those who apply for delayed graduation and wish to adjust the graduation date must fill out the “Graduation Intent Adjustment Form”.

Note 1: Indicate the intention to delay graduation when submitting the “Application for Degree Examination.” Students delaying graduation must still register and pay tuition.

The Office of Registration prepares diplomas for students expected to graduate each semester. If students fail to graduate on time, a fee of NT$150 will be charged to reprint the diploma.

The actual date of diploma issuance may vary.

Thesis upload instructions are available on the “NCCU Electronic Thesis & Dissertation System” → “Upload Thesis”.
Two hardbound copies must be submitted to the library, and two to the department office.

Students are responsible for any consequences due to failure to comply with the above procedures.
